California Tornado Destroys Scott Valley, Topples Cars and Trees

A tornado struck Scotts Valley on Saturday afternoon, causing damage to vehicles, toppling trees and power poles, and forcing the closure of Mount Hermon Road to traffic.

A tornado struck Scotts Valley on Saturday afternoon, causing damage to vehicles, toppling trees and power poles, and forcing the closure of Mount Hermon Road to traffic.

The National Weather Service confirmed that the tornado touched down in Scotts Valley around 1:40 p.m. Meteorologist Matt Mehle told Lookout that the weather service initially observed “weak rotation” in a storm system but hesitated to declare a tornado until reports surfaced on social media showing a funnel cloud over Scotts Valley. Following these reports, the agency dispatched a team to survey the area.

Scotts Valley Police Department Captain Scott Garner expressed disbelief when he first received the report. Having worked in the area for nearly 28 years, he said he had never heard of a tornado hitting the region before.

Garner reported that five people were injured in the incident. Three were transported to local medical centers, while two others sought medical evaluation on their own. Fortunately, there were no fatalities, and “no life-threatening injuries were reported to us, which is great news,” he added.

In addition to the injuries, there was “significant property damage,” including overturned vehicles and a large tree falling onto a structure at Scotts Valley Middle School. Garner noted that businesses along Mount Hermon Road were among the hardest hit, though it was still too early to estimate the financial cost as damage assessments were ongoing..

“There was a lot of debris in the area,” Garner said. “I don’t know how far it spread.”

Mount Hermon Road remained closed on Saturday afternoon between Scotts Valley Drive and Lockewood Lane as cleanup and damage evaluations continued.
